Spring |  Fall

Memorial Service

Joss Paper

In Chinese culture, the paying of respect to ancestors is an important aspect as people believe ghosts and spirits exist in the world alongside the living. According to ancient Chinese belief, a person’s soul is split into two after death; one travels to the afterlife while the other resides within a shrine. Thus, the tradition is to pay respect to the deceased by offering sacrificial food, and burning incense and money.

Spring | Fall

Twice a year, families of any deceased members will gather around the tombstone/shrine and perform a “tomb sweep”. The act of cleaning the gravesite is considered a sign of respect. This ritual is known as the Qin Min 清明 Festival occurring in the Spring and in the Fall, it is known as Double Ninth (重陽 Chongyang) Gravesweeping Festival.
